Legends and Stories:

Once Brahma had a difference of opinion with saraswathy. Various temples quote various reasons as fight between Saraswathy and Lakshmi brahma sided Lakshmi, etc. bottom line there was misunderstanding between the couple . Brahma was upset that he had no temple on earth hence wanted to do ashwamedha yagna to please perumal but as his wife Saraswathy was not prepared to accompany him he was aghast he prayed to lord and went ahead with the yagna with Savithri and his other wives. This angered Saraswathy and the Asuras who instigated saraswathy she  tried to disturb the yagna with the asuras .Brahma prayed to the lord who took the fearful form of Asta bhuja the eight shouldered lord with weapons and killed the asuras

This is also the place where Gajendramoksham took place (Extract from the wiki Extract from Wiki

There was once an elephant named Gajendra who used to live in a garden called Rtumata which was created by Varuna. This garden was situated in the beautiful mountains of Trikuta in ancient India. Gajendra ruled over all the other elephants in the herd. On a hot day, he proceeded with his herd to a lake to cool off in its fresh waters. Suddenly a crocodile living in the lake attacked Gajendra and caught him by the leg. Gajendra tried for a long time to escape from the crocodile's clutches. All his family, relatives and friends gathered around to help him, but in vain. The crocodile wouldn't simply let go. When they realised that ‘death’ has come close to Gajendra, they left him alone. He trumpeted in pain and helplessness until he was hoarse. As the struggle was seemingly endless and when the last drop of energy was also sapped, Gajendra called to god Vishnu to save him, holding a lotus up in the air as an offering. It is believed that Gajendra's foot was held by the crocodile for over a thousand of years.

Hearing his devotee's call and a prayer, Lord Vishnu rushed to the scene. As Gajendra sighted the Lord coming, he lifted a lotus with his trunk, seeing this lord was pleased and with his Sudharshana Chakra separated the crocodile's head from its body and Gajendra prostrated before the Lord. Vishnu informed Gajendra that he, in one of his previous births, was the celebrated King Indradyumna, a Vishnu devotee, but due to his disrespect to the great Sage Agastya, he was cursed and had to undergo this life.

Because Indradyumna was a chosen one, Lord Vishnu had him born as Gajendra and made him realize that there is something called, "Kaivalya" which is beyond Svarga and Urdhva Loka. Indradyumna could attain Moksha finally when he (as Gajendra) left all his pride and doubt and totally surrendered himself to Vishnu.

The prayer made by Gajendra on this occasion became a famous hymn in praise of Vishnu called the Gajendra Stuti.

शुक्लांबरधरं विष्णुं शशि वर्णं चतुर्भुजं
प्रसन्न वदनं ध्यायेत सर्व विघ्नोपशान्तये

Gajendra, in his previous life was a great devotee called Indradyumna who was also a great king. One day, Agastya, a great rishi (sage) came to visit the king but Indradyumna sat heavy on his seat, did not rise up to receive the sage with the respect. A fuming Agastya noticed that the great King, despite the greatness of his good deeds, still has traces of Ahamkara in him and elucidated to the King that in his next birth, he would be born as an elephant in which he would be taught the hard way that self is to be renounced and surrendered to the Lord.

The crocodile in its previous birth was a Gandharva king called HuHu. Once Sage Devala came to visit him. The two were taking bath and Sage Devala was offering prayers to Surya (the Sun god) when Huhu pulled the sage's leg for fun. The enraged sage cursed the king to become a crocodile in his next life. The repentant HuHu asked for pardon. The Sage proclaimed that though he cannot reverse the curse, the crocodile would be liberated from the cycle of birth and death only when Vishnu himself in his full form visits the Earth upon invocation by a holy soul.

Thus the two souls were redeemed from their curses, the results of their "Puraakritam". King Indradyumna immediately attainedVaikuntha, the abode of Vishnu far higher than Swarga. This is referred to as Saroopya Mukti, or the liberation of receiving a spiritual body. The tale of Gajendra forms an integral theme in the Vaishnavism religion and has huge symbolic value with Gajendra as the man, Huhu as sins and the muddy water of the lake as Saṃsāra.

. According to scriptures it seems there was already a temple for , Lord Vishnu  as Adi Kesava Perumal even before Brahma prayed to him

.Perumal is holding discus, sword, flower and an arrow in His right 4 hands, conch, bow, armour and club in the left four hands. The entrance and Sorgavasal in Perumal temples are generally in different directions. Both are facing north in this temple, a special feature.

This is the 33 Divya desa with the Mangalasasanam of Saints Peyazhwar and Tirumangai Azhwar. This is the only Vishnu temple with a Mangalasasanam dedicated exclusively for Mother Alarmel Mangai

Sri Yathodkari perumal temple Kanchipuram- A divya desam

This is a very important Vishnu temple in Kanchi very close to the Varadaraja perumal temple .It is also known as Thiruvekka / Sonnavannan seitha perumal temple Divyadesam No 36 of 108.

How to Reach:

The temple is in Chinna Kanchi very close to the Varadaraja perumal temple .and across the road from the Ashtabhuja perumal temple.

Legends and Stories:

The temple is the birthplace of Poigai alwar who was born in the lily pond on the northeast side of the temple.

This is the temple where manavaala maamuni expounded his Sri Bhashyam. There is an idol of him here showing the Vyakya Mudra suggesting expounding of knowledge.

Once Brahma had a difference of opinion with saraswathy. Various temples quote various reasons as fight between Saraswathy and Lakshmi brahma sided Lakshmi,  Brahma was upset that he had no temple on earth hence wanted to do ashwamedha yagna to please perumal but as his wife Saraswathy was not prepared to accompany him he was aghast he prayed to lord and went ahead with the yagna with Savithri and his other wives. This angered Saraswathy and she tried to disturb the yagna with the asuras as well as by flooding the place as a fast river-Vegavathi, Brahma fervently prayed to Perumal laid down as a Dam to contain the river and save the yagna.Metaphorically the angry Saraswathy when confronted by a male lying down in her path turned coy and stopped there. This is represented with the Goddess as Veghavathi coyly siting down at the foot of the perumal in the temple he is thus called "Vega Sethu".This Vega Sethu then became Vegavanai and then finally named as "Vekkanai" and finally became "Vekka".

Thirumazhisai Alwar who worshipped the Lord of Thiruvekka was cared for by a couple. When the son Kanikannan was born to them,he became the Alwar's steadfast devotee. One day when Kanikannan saw a woman frail and bent with age, sweeping the temple premises offering worship to the Lord,he was moved. He stroked her hunched back in appreciation. The power of his guru surged into him and the woman regained her youth and was able to continue offering worship to the Lord with fresh vigour. The king of the period who greedily desired his youth restored to him requested Kanikannan to do so.But the young mann refused outright which enraged the king and he banished Kanikannan from his kingdom. The Alwar prepared to go with him and asked Lord Thiruvekka also to come too,as he could not live without Him. The Lord rolled up his serpentine bed and obediently followed the Alwar and Kanikannan. The three travelled some distance way from Kancheepuram on the northern bank of the Paalaar river and stayed the night there. But,with the Lord's departure, the town was plunged in darkness and disorder. The ruler realized his mistake and rushed to the trio, seeking their forgiveness. The Lord returned to Kanchi with his devotees.
The place where he stayed overnight came to be known as Oriravu irukkai, which later got shortened to Orirukkai. The Alwar told Perumal to lie down as they had come back the lord promptly obeyed him in the same place he was in such a hurry he laid down facing west unlike in other temples, He is thus called Sonna vannan seitha perumal one who obeys promptly ref:my blog manimandapam of Maha periyava

The Thayar Mahalakshmi is facing East in the first praharam seen above.

The lord is seen in a Siting Posture in the main praharam. There are 2 other Vigrahas as Ranganathar behind and as a standing lord. The Ranganathar sannidhi is opened only on Ekadashi days and the Standing Lord is not offered daily Pujas as there is no access to climb the temple.
