Aapath sahayeshwarar Temple Tirupazhanam near Thiruvaiyaru A Sapthastanam temple-Padal Petra Sthalam

How to reach:

This temple is situated to the North east of Thiruvaiyaru on the Kumbakonam road about 3.5 kms from Thiruvaiyaru. From the Aiyarappar temple cross the Thyagaraja aradhana grounds and the music college and you will see the temple on the left

Legends:

The temple has been sung by Appar,Sambanthar,Sundarar. Appar saw many watering stands built in his name here by a Saint called Appodi adigal who was living nearby in Thingalur( Chandran Navagraha Kshetram). Appar bought back to life the son of appodi adigal who was bitten by a snake here.

Nandi,s wedding received fruits as presents from Shiva from here Hence Thiru=Lord Pazhanam = fruits in Tamil

A five tiered Rajagopuram is on the eastern Gate, the entrance to this temple seen above.There are two praharams. The Main Rajagopuram leads us to the outer praharam there are shrines to Venugopala and Mahalakshmi

 

The outer praharam has 7 Sapthasthana lingams of Tiruvaiyaru

In the inner Praharam there are the koshta vigrahas and shrines for Gajalakshmi Venugopala The vimanam is made entirely of granite.; there is also an image of Varaha-Vishnu in this temple. Inscriptions from the period of Parantaka I are seen in this temple.

The main Sanctum has a Shiva Lingam resplendent in all its glory.

The Ambal Periya nayaki Sannidhi is a separate enclosure outside in the first praharam with its own Nandi

The Sapthastanam Siva temples around Tiruvaiyaru

There are a group of Seven Shiva temples around Thiruvaiyaru where  Nandi after getting married in Thirumazhapadi  visited these temples with Lord Shiva escorting him, Nandi was the son of siladitha maharishi. Lord shiva was very pleased with Nandi’s prayers and took him as his chief attendant, got him married. This occation is celebrated in this area with a glass bedecked palanquin festival which will congregate in the Cauvery during the Tamil month of Chittirai.Each of this temples provided a special gift for nandis wedding

Saptha Stanam

The sapthasthanam festival is conducted at Tiruvaiyaru during April every year. Hundreds of people witness the convergence of seven glass palanquins carrying principal deities of respective temples from seven places at Tiruvaiyaru. The palanquins are paraded near the car stand, the crowd witnessed the Poochorithal(flower festival) in which a doll offers flowers to the principal deities in the palanquins. Neyyadiappar Temple             Tiruneithaanam

Thirukandiyur Brahma sira kandishwarar temple a veerattanam and a Sapthastanam temple- padal petra sthalam

This ancient temple is very close to the Tiruvaiyaru temple just down the road infact. It is both a veerattanam where Shiva killed Brahma’s  fifth head and also a sapthastanam for Nandi's wedding. It lie's.on the banks of the Kudamurutti river Interestingly there is a Perumal koil in front which is a divya desam and the perumal is supposed to have removed the curse of killing Brahma In another version Shiva became a bhikshandar due to this act of killing Brahma and had to wander around till Utthamar koil to get relief from the curse.

How to reach:

The Road from Tirukattupalli along the Vellar north bank ends at this temple a right turn leads to Tanjore and a left turn leads to Tiruvaiyaru, So about  a few furlongs from the Tiruvaiyaru temple brings us in front of this temple

Legends of the temple:

Once Parvathy mistook Brahma for Shiva as both of them had 5 heads and she did pada pooja for Brahma mistaking him to be Shiva this gave a ego boost to Brahma which enraged shiva and he chopped of the fifth head of Brahma here.

The rajagopuram leads us to an inner praharam which has the Mirror bedecked palanquin for the lord  in this sapthastanam  There is ,a Raja Ganapathy shrine under a Bhilva tree seen  behind the Nandi here and on the opposite side is the Mangalambikai ambal sannidhi

The next gopuram leads us to the inner praharam

The main sanctum has a shiva lingam and the separate sannidhi for Brahma with saraswathy. The idol of Brahma is about 3-4 feet tall which is seen below

Pushpavana Nathar Temple, Tiruppoonturuthi-padal petra sthalam, Sapthastanam,

This is a padal petra sthalam Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavvukkarasar have sung padigams  here. It is also a part of the Sapthastanams of Nandis wedding around Truvaiyaru. It is an ancient temple with 7 gopurams. THe peculiarity of this temple is that all the Nandi’s here are off set to the side to allow the lord to have a free look at thiru gnanasambandar .THerev are quite a few nandis I could count and all were off set .
All the seven Gopurams can be seen from a single spot in the temple . The day I visited there was a annadanam where in thousand had come walking here in the hot sun from far off places and were all resting.

How to reachTiruppoonturuthi is located 3 Kms to the west of Tirukkandiyur and at a distance of less than 2 Kms. from Tiruvaalampozhil. Nearest town is Tiruvaiyaru.

The ambal sannidhi has a small ambal sitting and blessing us. The temple was scorching hot hence I could not make a full pradakshinam around.
This is the temple where Thirunavukkarasar was camping when Thirugnanasambandar came in a palanquin and when he loudly called out for appar was surprised to get a reply from appar who was carrying the palanquin in all humility. From here these two went visiting and  singing songs on Shiva temples
