Sri Komaleeshwaran–Komalambikai temple at Komaleeshwaran pet also known as Pudupet, Chennai

Today 14/1/18 being a local holiday due to Pongal  festival I had the opportunity to visit this ancient temple in the middle of Chennai. Pudupet is more known for the motor spares, scraps and automobile industry and an ancient temple here is a wonder.

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is situated on the arterial Adithanar salai the road from Egmore to Mount road leading to the Omundurar estate hospital.the temple is of a cul de sac on this road midway

LEGEND OF THE TEMPLE:

The river Cooum which flows nearby changes direction  nearby and flows from west to North before changing directions to east. This is considered very holy. Its a sad fact that the Cooum then known as Ksheerasagaram (ocean of milk) is reduced to a sewer carrier now

The famous dubash of Madras patchaiappa mudaliar lived here and was supposedly taking bath in the river and praying to this lord daily.

A local rich merchant and his wife Sri Sah had renovated this temple in the 1800 as per stone edicts in the temple

A large number of mystics have stayed here

A few cowherds saw a cow dripping milk on to an ant hill and when disturbed he ant hill revealed a Shiva lingam which was installed in a temple here

Sri Shaniswarar Temple–Kalpattu near Vizhupuram with modern gigantic vigrahams under construction

I had to attend a medical camp at Neyveli on 17 Dec 2017 it was 2 days before the Sani peyarchi and I knew that the shani temple in Thirunallar would be crowded. I then came to know there is another Shaniswarar temple near Vizhupuram in the village Kalpattu hence I decided to visit this place

How to Reach:

Kalpattu is a sleepy village on the Vizhupuram Tirukoilur road via Mambalapattu. There is no access from the NH 45 hence I entered Vizhupuram town and next to the bus stand took a turn into theTirukoilur road  popularly referred to as Mambalapattu road in about 15 kms I reached Mambalapattu and saw the temple board20171217_093039

A turn to the left here and a couple of kilometres later we arrived in front of the temple

HISTORY AND LEGENDS OFTHE TEMPLE:

This is a prayer centre. The temple was built by a swamiji  His Holiness Brahmananda Swamigal. The temple is about 500 years old but it was all modern construction

. The Pranava Ganapathi at the entrance was found from a tank here believed to have been worshipped by Desingu Raja. It was obtained while renovating a pond nearby.

The temple is still under construction below is the prayer hall in front of the shani vigraham

The gentleman in the fore front is the present head of the ashram and he shooed me for coming into the inner chamber but I was not aware it was a restricted area

.Ravana had held all the devas captive during the birth of Inderjit his son as he did not want any malefic eye of the navagrahas to fall on the child but shani somehow cast his eye and thus in anger Ravana broke Shani’s right leg which resulted in a deformity and so it takes him a slow 7 1/2 years to go around the sun

The temple is in a small hamlet and the local folk were getting ready to handle the crowd  for the Saturn transition in the next few days .

Sri Vaideeswarar koil Chintamani near Vizhupuram Also known as Raja Raja Cholan kovil

I glanced upon this exquisite temple by chance on the maps and proceeded here on 17 Dec 2017’

The temple is quite ancient and is known as Raja raja chozan koil locally.this refers to a descendent of the great Raja raja Chola  who assumed his ancestors’ name as a title and was the son of Kulathunga chola I .He is credited with ascending the throne before he was 10 years old( the grandson of Kundavai piratti who was Kulathungas mother),ruling alongside his father for many years and finally re annexing Vengi nadu after defeating the chalukyas.Edicts about him are found in Sidlaghatta near Tumkur Karnataka  and he was a great devotee of Shiva ,lived in Chidambaram in a palace near the temple and was also known as Parakesari. Incidentally Chintamani is the name of a buzzling business centre close to Tumkur in Karnataka .

HOW TO REACH:

The temple is just off the NH45  while travelling on the GST road after crossing the Vikravandi toll and the Mundiyambakkam  exit leading to the Vizhupuram Medical college, a small tiny road leads to this temple in a place called Chintamani. You will need to travel 2 kms on this village road with amazing scenery20171217_084944

The temple is in peaceful surroundings with many rare Koshta vigrahas as seen below. The small temple has two east facing sannidhis for Vaitheeswaran and Thayalnayagi

As you enter there is a huge idol of hanuman on the left facing west it was Hanuman Jayanthi when I visited and a gala pooja was planned for the evening

Sri Parashurameshwara temple at Gudimallam–The most ancient Shiva temple documented in AP near Tirupati

Gudimallam  is a nondescript village off the beaten track near Renigunta near Tirupati. It is the site of a very ancient Shiva temple thought to be built in 1 BC as per archeological evidence of the potsherds and the huge bricks un earthed here. It has been later rebuilt as a granite temple with the Gaja prushti type vimana by successive dynasties like the shatavahanas, Banas, Cholas and Hoysalas.

How to reach:

While proceeding from Tirupati to Sri Kalahasti, in less than a furlong  take a turn on the right ,the road on the right to papa Naidu Peta and Gudimallam It is about 22 kms from Tirupati.

The trip by itself became an adventure thanks to Google maps and overnight rain. I trusted the maps implicitly and proceeded on the Kalahasthi road behind the Renigunta airport. After crossing an under-construction  college the adventure became interesting. The road disappeared and a dirt track emerged with slushy quick sand made worse by rain and deep tracks formed by giant tyres of tractors which use the road. There were two areas of concrete only where we waded through the now dry Swarnamukhi river. There were no people to ask directions due to rain and my new jazz bravely trudged through the sludge. My heart was in my mouth many times. I was going around in Papa Naidu Peta village and ultimately came to the temple after doing a pradakshina all in one piece God's will I accepted. My octogenarian father in law, a seasoned veteran of many a gory neurosurgical battle who came with me developed a tension headache and I am sure was in direct prayer link with his Guru Sri Mahaperiyava who safely saw us to the temple. The return journey was on tar roads thankfully as I could ask few people

The temple is under the administration of the ASI and hence neatly maintained an oasis in the middle of the sleepy village

legends and facts:

A local chieftain called Parashurama was blessed by the lord and he had a garden which was used to do Pooja to the lord. Chitrasena a yaksha stole a few flowers and a fight ensured between the two and the yaksha was cursed to be an Asura. Some say Chitrasena was actually Brahma, sent by Shiva to help Parashurama absolve himself of his dosha of beheading his own mother.

The Shivalinga is unique and remarkably like a phallus. The front portion has a dwarf Chitrasena over whom Parashurama is standing in full warrior mode. This they say is amalgamation of Shiva , Vishnu as Parashurama and Brahma as the dwarf below

The whole sanctum is at a lower level and once in 40 years the swarnamukhi flows enough to cause a fountain effect inside and submerges the lord. The last time was in 2005, a remarkable feat of engineering. The sun’s rays fall on the lord directly on Uttarayana and Dakshinayana solstice days.

A truly adventurous trip I had with family that journey really re enforced my strong belief in the positivity of sincere prayers!!!

I saw recent reports of multiple tunnels and chambers discovered in the temple precinicts which are being studied. One theory as per the book Chariot of the gods says these temples are the documentation of aliens, their attire with soace suits, helmets , their vehicles and their technology left behind which was documented by our  early ancestors . Who knows?

legend of this temple:

Lord Indra had sent his cow with sage vashishta. He was saddened to know that owing to some reason Kamadhenu had incurred the rishis wrath and was under a curse.Indra was advised to build a temple between Mylapore and Adyar river and pray to lord Shiva to retrieve Kamadhenu. He first asked Lord varuna to pour rain and make this area fertile and then built the temple here. Lord Shiva was happy and conferred the title “Gopathy” lord of the Cows to Indra here and released Kamadhenu back

As you enter the Rajagopuram we see the wide praharam.Right in front is the Ambal Swarnambikai Sannidhi
